On the cycle path along the Ems I – culinary discoveries

By bike along the river Ems

The cycle path along the Ems has plenty to offer for cyclists. Besides diverse natural experiences the river Ems flows through different cultivated landscapes, which became manifest in the regional cuisine. Westphalia is known for strong brown bread and meaty ham. But the taste of "Knabbeln" is even to locals not common anymore, the "Pickert [regional potato dish] equator" will be rediscovered. The cycle tour searches for traces along the Ems between Rheda-Wiedenbrück and Warendorf. Along the way you will find small Westphalian delights for the taste buds, regional recipes and ready-to serve dishes. During the tour you are able to fortify yourself with regional Westphalian dishes. The tour will end at a large coffee table.

On the cycle path along the Ems II – Of proud stallions and wild horses

The riverbed of the Ems completely consists of sand. Dunes are a dominant feature along the course of the river, also in between Warendorf and Münster. Wherever agriculture has not conquered nature yet, aromatic juniper heath borders the path. The particular soil conditions were decisive for the foundation of the NRW State Stud in Warendorf. The region around Warendorf and along the river Ems has offered the best conditions for horse husbandry. This is also shown by the fact that Koniks, a robust mixed breed between domestic horse and wild horse, have been resettled here. This tour takes you to the Westphalian horse museum where the origins of the ancient horse are displayed as well as the trophies of the rider legend Hans-Günter Winkler.
